Paper City Article - January, 2009 - The Treasure Hunt

I hesitate to let you in on this remarkable find, but The Guild Shop of St. John the Divine is one of the best consignment shops in town.  Whenever the mood strikes, I rummage about this River Oaks-area mecca and always come away with something amazing.  Last time I was there, I found a pair of Spratling serving pieces (pictured here), a Georg Jensen silver hairbrush and various silver Los Castillo pieces, all locked away in the silver case.  Another time, I found an original mid-century modern Knoll table, a zebra-skin rug and vintage alligator handbag.  Prices gradually go down the longer these treasures languish in the store, making steal deals an everyday possibility.  Of course, I’ve consigned my fair share of objects I no longer desire, too – leaving them behind, forgotten, only to open my mailbox later to find a tidy little check.  2009 Dunlavy, 713-528-5095; theguildshop.org.  Laurann Claridge

Houston Press - Best Resale Shop, 2008

While you're not too likely to find that vintage Van Halen T-shirt at The Guild Shop, it has plenty of other treasures within its walls. It's a great place to find higher-end clothing and retro goods that you typically won't find in the majority of thrift stores. The place is also Montrose's well-kept secret place to score nice furniture on the cheap. From modern-style couches to fancy dishware, you can find it in this place and for a good bargain. If not, wait a week or two and they'll lower the price.

Houston Press  – Best Resale Shop, 2003

Perhaps you've always craved a sterling silver tea set, or a vintage rhinestone brooch or a velvet couch. From the sublimely beautiful to the ridiculously tacky, the Guild Shop has it all -- and at great prices. Because parishioners at the upscale St. John the Divine Church donate their often valuable castoffs to this church-sponsored resale shop, fancy but outdated designer clothes, jewelry and sterling abound. Watch prices fall with monthly markdowns, but beware: Antiques dealers regularly scout for bargains and swoop down when prices drop.

Houston Press  – Best Resale Shop, 2002

Variety and good deals are the key to this thrift store's success. Items are marked according to how long they've been on the shelf, so the longer an item is there, the cheaper the price. This keeps the store packed with furniture, clothes, dishes, lamps, glassware, crystal, silver, artwork and a plethora of knickknacks. It's clean and well organized; you may have to scour through 50 crystal bowls to find the one you want, but they're all located in one section. There's no need to do the hard legwork of riding from one store to the next getting tired, dirty and disappointed.

Hot Town Cool City - This brief write up tells of the, "very high quality used jewelry, furniture and clothing in this popular shop in the Montrose area."

Houston Tidbits - Antique On The Rocks

That fab vintage lamp in your bedroom was rescued from a flea market, and your brand new rug came from Craig’s List. Your bargain hunting skills cannot be matched. Until now…

The mixologists at the much-anticipated Anvil Bar & Refuge scoured places like The Guild Shop for months to build their collection of vintage martini and champagne glasses, and the drinks are poured with just as much care. The guys behind the bar at Beaver’s and Textile opened up a place of their own last weekend and here, you’ll find sugar cubes, egg whites, and a classic approach to cocktails...
