Thanks, Katharine S.!
Yelp user Katharine S. has created a list of her favorite shopping places, and she put us at the top! She had a lot to say, but we’ll just quote a bit:
“I almost hesitate to turn people on to The Guild Shop sometimes, for fear that it will become even busier than it already is. But I can’t keep such a wonderful place a secret, no matter how much I might want to.”
Thanks for sharing, Katharine!
The best secondhand store in Houston
More kind words about us, this time from Yelp user Jeremy G.:
“The Guild Shop is – hands down – the best secondhand store in Houston.…I’ve seen almost everything under the sun here. The jewelry section is famous, and the ladies running it are usually extremely helpful. They have an enormous selection of knick-knacks, art objects, furniture and paintings; some of this junk tends to be delightfully quirky.”
We’re blushing, Jeremy. Thanks!
CBS gives us some love
CBS Houston just published an article on the Best Thrift Stores & Flea Markets In Houston, and they put us at the top of the list, saying “This second-hand shop is charming, yet spacious, with room for a large inventory that changes regularly.” Thanks for noticing!
Texas Monthly Mention
In the October 2012 Texas Monthly, Jordan Breal writes, “Though technically a thrift store that’s run by a local Episcopal church, it feels more like an estate sale that all the neighbors have rushed over to pick through.” Jordan, sorry the line was too long for you to buy when you came by. Hope you can return when you’re not on deadline!
Best Resale Shop – Houston Press
In the 2002 Best Of Houston awards, the Houston Press has named The Guild Shop the Best Resale Shop in Houston:
“Variety and good deals are the key to this thrift store’s success.… There’s no need to do the hard legwork of riding from one store to the next getting tired, dirty and disappointed.”
The Houston Press just named us Best Gamble for Junk. Yes, it’s a gamble to wait for prices to go down to get a bargain. But are wicker wheelchairs or vintage Star Wars sheets really junk?
Best Used Furniture – 2010
We’ve won another Best of Houston award from the Houston Press, this one for Best Used Furniture 2010. As they put it:
“The slogan at The Guild Shop is “Resale at Its Best,” and we doubt that any city has a better resale shop than this Montrose gem.”
Thanks for the vote of confidence, Houston Press!
Best Resale Shop 2011 (Readers’ Choice)
We may not have won the Houston Press editors’ vote for Best Resale Shop this year, but we did better than that: we got your vote. We are the Readers’ Choice this year. Thanks to all of you who gave us that vote of confidence, and we mean to keep earning it in the year ahead!
Bloke Mag likes our style
Bloke Magazine did some shopping here for their summer style photo shoot. Here’s an example that didn’t make the print edition. Check it out!
More true tales
More true tales from our customers: A desk bought at The Guild Shop at a bargain gets redone and finds a new life in a home office. See the story here.
Best Resale Shop, 2003
For the second year running, the Houston Press has named The Guild Shop the Best Resale Shop in Houston.
“From the sublimely beautiful to the ridiculously tacky, the Guild Shop has it all — and at great prices.… Watch prices fall with monthly markdowns, but beware: Antiques dealers regularly scout for bargains and swoop down when prices drop.”
Best Resale Shop – 2008
The Houston Press has again named The Guild Shop Houston’s Best Resale Shop. They say: “It’s a great place to find higher-end clothing and retro goods that you typically won’t find in the majority of thrift stores. The place is also Montrose’s well-kept secret place to score nice furniture on the cheap.”
How to Shop Vintage
Christina Uticone writes in the Houston Press some of her key rules for getting great vintage pieces. She found one of her favorite vintage pieces, a Whiting & Davis white mesh chain strap handbag, for only $20 at The Guild Shop. Why not check out her tips, then try them out here at The Guild Shop?
We agree with Jessie D.
On Yelp, Jessie D. says, “If you’re looking for some great vintage jewelry, antique furniture, or random knick knacks, then this is a GREAT place to start your search.” We agree, Jessie, and thanks for sharing!
